Admissions
Students are admitted to Valley Academy on a space-available basis. An interview is held with each student and the parent to establish an understanding of our school and policies. All parents who are new to VAL participate in the Mentorship Program. This program pairs new families with experienced volunteers to find answers to questions common to new families. The program is designed to facilitate parents' success in educating their student(s) while partnering with VAL.
A personalized Student Learning Plan (SLP) is developed in cooperation with SLP Consultant for each student. The SLP documents the activities, resources, and student's progress toward completing the stated goals and performance objectives. It may contain original ideas and resources or refer to existing courses and activities. Washington State Essential Academic Learning Requirements (EALRs) which broadly outline what students are supposed to learn as they move from kindergarten through 10th grade, and Grade Level Expectations (GLEs), which specify what students should learn in each individual grade.
SLPs and monthly logs of hours are reviewed beginning on the 20th of each month and are subject to audit. A curriculum allocation is available for each full time student for approved purchase of instructional materials and services in support of the SLP, Non-consumable purchases remain the property of the Wenatchee School District and are returned upon the completion of the student's learning or withdrawal from the school.
The Washington Assessment of Student Learning (WASL) is a required assessment currently covering four subjects: reading, writing, mathematics and science. 4th, 7th, and 10th grade students take the reading, writing, and math assessments (10th graders also take the science assessment). 5th and 8th graders take the science assessment only.
We desire to promote communication with the Parent Advisory Team, staff, and administration. Formal and informal surveys are completed by parents and used by the Parent Advisory Team representatives to make recommendations for classes and scheduling. A Suggestion Form is always available for parents to share new ideas and suggestions for improvements regarding school policies and functions.
