Vital #3: "Student
progress and grade level standards are clearly understood and made
available to all students and parents. Students set academic goals
and chart and monitor their progress."
I want to tell you
how thrilled I am with the web site that Shayne Wrezinski told
us about in class. It is a "build a rubric yourself form" site
that the government sponsors at the University of Kansas; http://rubistar.4teachers.org is
the address. I believe in rubrics and have tried to create them in the
past but with this handy dandy web site and 5 minutes it was a snap.
Now I feel like "I get it." You were the inspiration and impetus
to try, my students love it, and I think grading will be easier for me,
too. Thanks for all you do for us, Karen Bray (WHS)
Dave Bawden (Orchard
Middle School, seventh grade) has been utilizing the Promotion
Rubric in his class so that students can monitor their own progress
on a regular basis. He included the letter grades students may have so
that they could monitor that as well. He says that as a result, students
are becoming increasingly more clear that they are in charge of their own
learning and progress.
Pat Strand (Washington
Elementary) and the elementary music teachers have developed a pilot
format so that K-5 students can monitor and chart their own progress
in developing their musical skills. It seems simple, but in fact, is very
powerful in providing students clarity and a way to self assess.
The WSD band directors have
provided two important components of assessment through their Band Benchmarks:
one reflects the WSD Vision Element that "Curriculum and Instruction
for WSD students is clearly articulated and exceeds the State's Essential
Learning Requirements" and Vital Few #3 that students can monitor
and chart their own learning progress.

Charlie Hickenbottom (Lewis
and Clark Elementary, third grade) uses this
rubric to help his students monitor and chart their growth in writing.
Charlie also has writing rubrics as well
as one for analytical problem-solving (math).
Charlie has also
added a number of resources for teachers. The following compressed
folders contain AppleWorks documents for use.
