Database This site includes an extensive collection of academic standards from both the United States and abroad. The database allows the user to do a side-by-side comparison of standards from different states and countries. American Evaluation
Association (AEA) "The AEANET Home Page contains information about the AEA sponsored lists [EVALTALK and EVALINFO] and provides direct Web access to the files available on the AEA file server." The AEA pages offer access to information about the Targeted Interest Groups in the organization, a list of members' e-mail addresses, links to various sites, and a sample of their listserv activity. Association
for Supervision and Curriculum Development "ASCD is an international, nonprofit, nonpartisan education association committed to the mission of forging covenants in teaching and learning for the success of all learners. Founded in 1943, ASCD provides professional development in curriculum and supervision; encourages research, evaluation, and theory development; and disseminates information on education issues ranging from inclusion to parent involvement, learning styles to school leadership." ASCD has many on-line discussion forums on issues in assessment. There are pages about issues in education today, links to professional development and education-related pages, organization publications, conference information, and an on-line catalog. Buros Institute
of Mental Measurements "The Buros Institute of Mental Measurements has a half-century history of serving the public interest and advancing the field of measurement. By providing professional assistance, expertise, and information to users of commercially published tests, the Institute promotes meaningful and appropriate test selection, utilization, and practice. The Buros Institute encourages improved test development and measurement research through thoughtful, critical analysis of measurement instruments and the promotion of an open dialogue regarding contemporary measurement issues." This site contains a test location service, reviews of tests by the institute's staff (and a fax service to have them delivered), opportunities to be a reviewer for their yearbook, and a list of related links. CEDaR (Council
for Educational Development and Research) "The Council for Educational Development and Research (CEDaR) is the education association whose members are devoted exclusively to long-term institutional research and development in education. CEDaR's mission is to create new knowledge about the most difficult problems facing education today and to harness that knowledge with educators' own experiences to develop practical and tested solutions." CEDaR's site has links to their policy statements; the R and D Preview--their web page devoted to emerging developments in educational development; and a link to THOMAS (http://thomas.loc.gov/), an index to current national legislation. Student Learning "In 1993, the state legislature recognized that the world's changing demands required a thoughtful reexamination of how and what schools were teaching students. The Legislature established an 11-member Commission on Student Learning and assigned it the dual task of developing clear, challenging academic standards that every student in the state will be expected to meet, and finding more effective ways to measure whether schools are preparing students to meet these higher expectations." on Information and Technology (ERIC/IT) This site contains a question and answer service, FAQs (frequently asked questions--a net term for a helpful question and answer guide), a virtual library, and information about research and development related to education technology. The virtual library contains lesson plans, listserv archives, companion materials for television programs, and various other materials. Educational
Testing Service (ETS) "Educational Testing Service was founded in 1947 as a nonprofit educational measurement institution. We've grown to be the world's largest, developing achievement, occupational, and admissions tests for clients in education, government, and business. Based in Princeton, New Jersey, we annually administer more than 9 million exams in the U.S. and 180 other countries." ETS developed familiar batteries of tests, such as the GRE, GMAT, and LSAT. Their website gives information about these products, study/preparation guides, career planning products, links to scholarship programs, assessment sites, and placement. Contains help files and a search engine for the site. Ericae.net The ERIC Clearinghouse is a great source of assessment, evaluation, and research information. You can even subscribe to the listserv tro receive online announcements of new, pertinent articles. ERIC is always a great place to start your search. The Evaluation
Center at Western Michigan University/Evaluation Center/CREATE This web page lists the most popular products produced by CREATE and gives information on ordering them through the Web. Provides a link to ERIC. Higher Education
Processes (HEPROC) "HEPROC, short for Higher Education Processes, is a collaborative, participatory discussion and research environment for higher education interests. HEPROC provides forums, databases, and other interactivity in support of higher education improvement, serving over 4500 visitors per month and over 1800 members in 40 countries." The HEPROC website is organized as a resource for those interested in assessment in education. The site has a wide variety of information, organized according to theme and type of resource. Plan Index Educators can search for standards-based lessons in several subjects. McREL: Mid-Continental
Regional Educational Laboratory McREL analyzed 112 documents representing national organizations and exemplary state standards and synthesized them into a common format. The database describes 255 academic standards and their related performance standards, which are organized into 14 major categories. This is a "one-stop-shopping" source for educators. National Assessment
Governing Board "Welcome to the National Assessment Governing Board's (NAGB's) Web site. NAGB is a 26-member board established by Congress in 1988 to set policy for the National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP). NAEP is the only nationally representative and continuing assessment of what America's students know and can do in various academic subjects." The NAGB site offers information on the board's activities and a calendar of upcoming reports. Electronic versions are provided along with order forms for paper copies. National Assessment
of Educational Progress "The National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP) is mandated by Congress (GEPA, Section 406) to monitor continuously the knowledge, skills, and performance of the nation's children and youth. Under this legislation, NAEP is required to provide objective data about student performance at national, regional, and, on a trial basis, state levels." The NAEP site offers a variety of reports on educational progress. A history of prior national assessments and methods is presented, as well as data analyses and report cards on the nation's educational health. National Center
for Education Statistics "Who are we? What do we do? The NCES provides extensive statistics on education and educational topics, as well as links to other education resources. NCES publications, collaborative efforts, and a search engine for the site are offered as well. National Center
for Fair and Open Testing FairTest is an advocacy organization working to end the abuses, misuses, and flaws of standardized testing and ensure that evaluation of students and workers is fair, open, and educationally sound. National Center
for Research on Evaluation, Standards, and Student Testing (CRESST) "CRESST provides access to educational research about assessment reform in American schools. This Web site contains assessment information presented in a variety of formats tailored to meet the needs of multiple audiences." The CRESST site offers a searching service for assessment documents. The "Alternative Assessment in Practice Database" can be downloaded as a .pdf (portable document format) or searched via the web. CRESST documents are searchable for specific audiences as well as content. Links to other sites are also provided. A browser that supports tables is required for this site. National Center
on Postsecondary Teaching, Learning and Assessment (Penn. State) "NCTLA is a research, development, and dissemination center committed to exploring teaching and learning, the improvement of educational practice, and the advancement of theory and practice in the assessment of student and institutional performance. NCTLA is a consortium of The Pennsylvania State University, the University of Illinois at Chicago, Northwestern University, Syracuse University, Arizona State University, and the University of Southern California." This website is a contact page for reaching the center. It gives contact information only. National Council
on Measurement in Education (NCME) "The National Council on Measurement in Education (NCME) is a professional organization of about 2,300 members. Many members are involved in either the construction and uses of educational tests or the development and evaluation of measurement models and methods. NCME members are committed to the continual improvement of testing and measurement practices in education." This site contains information about the organization, general announcements, job postings, public domain software, links to other measurement-related organizations, and information about individual members. National Library
of Education "In March 1994, the U.S. Congress authorized the establishment of the National Library of Education (NLE) within the U.S. Department of Education. Thus the Department's Education Research Library became a national library. Already the largest federally funded library in the world devoted solely to education, the National Library is the federal government's principal center for one-stop information and referral on education. NLE houses onsite more than 200,000 books and about 750 periodical subscriptions in addition to studies, reports, Educational Resources Information Center (ERIC) microfiche, and CD-ROM databases." The National Library of Education provides a list of services they offer and links to other sites of interest. Visitors can find out about the library's mission, history, and organization. Regional Education Laboratory (NCREL) "NCREL is a not-for-profit organization devoted to researching and implementing best practices in public schools so that all students achieve standards of educational excellence. From providing technical assistance to developing products, from sharing research to collaborating with state agencies, we strengthen state educational reform efforts and support regional networks in our region. In particular, our emphasis is on supporting School Development." The NCREL site contains contact information, information on the "Pathways to School Development" program, and links to other NCREL member sites. Northwest Regional
Educational Laboratory (NWREL) "The Northwest Regional Educational Laboratory's mission is to improve educational results for children, youth, and adults by providing research and development assistance in delivering equitable, high quality educational programs. NWREL provides research and development assistance to education, government, community agencies, business and labor. NWREL's primary service area is the Northwest states of Alaska, Idaho, Montana, Oregon, and Washington." Regional Alliance
for Mathematics and Science Education Reform "The Regional Alliance supports K-12 mathematics, science, and technology (MST) reform efforts in the Northeast and Islands Region. Coordinated by TERC and funded by the U.S. Department of Education, the Regional Alliance provides professional development opportunities, technical assistance, and resources to schools seeking to formulate and execute MST reform plans." The Regional Alliance site offers links to alliance member sites, information on programs, and a calendar of events. Links to sites of related interest are available. Regional Educational
Laboratory (REL) Educational R&D Network "Research for Better Schools (RBS) is a private, nonprofit corporation which currently operates the Mid-Atlantic Eisenhower Consortium for Mathematics and Science Education and previously served as a regional educational laboratory, both under funding from the U.S. Department of Education. In its 30 years of service to the education community, RBS has also offered educational technology, development, evaluation, technical assistance, and training services with client funding. Many tasks have actual student samples to help gauge your assessment of your own students. The site is well organized according to subtoics, such as life science, physical science, and biology.
