Strategies to Extend Student Thinking

  • Call on students randomly.
  • Utilize think-pair-share.
  • Remember wait time.
  • Ask follow-up questions.
  • Ask for a summary (to promote active listening.)
  • Survey the class.
  • Allow for students to call on one another.
  • Play devil's advocate.
  • Ask students to "unpack their thinking" (describe how you arrived at your answer.)
  • Encourage student questioning (allow time for them to develop their own questions.)

Cue student responses (no single correct answer; consider alternatives).
