Defintion of MYD Understandings:

• A myd district understanding is a policy  statement developed  to clarify  a procedure within the MYD citizenship program.

• The “district understanding” has been developed by district trainers to address errors or misunderstandings which have resulted in inconsistency of implementation across the district at both the elementary and middle levels.

• It is not an individual or a building decision as to whether to initiate the change, if needed.

• It is a district level expectation that all building administrators  provide the necessary time to ensure that  all staff utilizing myd have been informed of the understanding.

• It is the responsibility of staff to make the necessary adjustments in their implementation to ensure consistency within their learning environments.

• It is the responsibility of the building as a team to incorporate the understanding into their daily implementation of MYD and work towards building wide consistency.

Homework:

• Homework is not a component of the Make Your Day Program.
• Students should not be penalized with loss of MYD citizenship points or be assigned steps for not completing homework.
• Homework is ACADEMIC.
• The logical consequence for failure to complete homework is reflected by thte student's academic grade.
• It is an unfortunate reality that students do not have identical home lives.  Some homes come with support while others do not.  Punishing a student through automatic loss of their citizenship points or by imposing steps, despite our best intentions, is coercive in nature.  Remember, it's Make Your Day, not make your night before!  If we choose to assess citzenship points in this manner, we are setting students up for failure as soon as they walk throught the door.  Granted, it may work for some, but it is not acceptable.

• NO STUDENT SHOULD BE ASSESSED AUTOMATIC POINTS FOR FAILURE
  TO COMPLETE HOMEWORK OR LIKEWISE BE REQUESTED TO GO TO
  STEPS FOR FAILURE TO MEET HOMEWORK EXPECTATIONS.

Did Not Make Your Day Slip

• Is simply a means of communication with parents. 
• If per chance, the student  does not return it signed, take the logical step and call the parent and fulfill the intended purpose.  Do not penalize the student by imposing steps or assessing myd citizenship points.

Yesterday.

• The phone call is made each time unless the parent either informs staff verbally or puts in writing that they “do not care to be informed of their child’s daily progress.”

• If you are so informed, make note of the conversation, and  continue to have the student fill out the slips and keep them.  They may come in handy at a later date.
