WSD Professional Development Format for Integrating Technology into Instruction

What?
WSD needs to integrate technology applications throughout the curriculum K-12

Why?
State law, state & national standards, & what kids need to know in our society

How?
Via specified and differentiated modules using the EdTech Survey as a baseline

Module I: Basic Concepts with Instructional Integration

Module II: Basic Applications

  • Word Processing with Instructional Integration
  • E-Mail
  • Internet
  • Communications: E-Mail Applications

Module III: Further Applications

  • Spreadsheet
  • Database
  • Presentation
  • Draw
  • Web Page Design
  • Other technology

Module IV: Student-Centered Technology integration continued

Module V: Advanced Applications (such as those specific to TRT’s and librarians)

Who?
District Technology Coach and TRT’s or other designees provide training

When?
The WSD Professional Development format is flexible enough to meet unique building or department needs and differentiated instruction.

  • Designate 2 days per month focused on technology in each building w/TRT(s) released and/or a floating sub to work with teachers in Module I & II and/ or time sheet after school using technology grant and/or Tech Levy funds
  • Refer to Staff Development inTechnology on District web to guide teaching
  • Use 2003-04 Family Guides as a minimum standard for technology integration

WSD Staff Development in Technology

MODULE I: Core Concepts & Skills

  • I know how to use pull-down/pop-up menus as well as how to switch between several open windows.
  • I know how to 'find' a saved file.
  • I can troubleshoot basic things before asking for help; such as, making sure the power is on for the machine and monitor, or ejecting a floppy disk or CD.
  • I know how to make a duplicate of an existing file.
  • I know how to determine where a file will be saved.
  • I am able to select, copy, and paste text.
  • I can create shortcut/alias icons.
  • I know how to install software from a CD ROM or set of floppy disks.
  • I use proofing tools (i.e., spell check, grammar check, etc.), find and replace within a document and know how to save a document in other file formats.
  • I know how to choose a printer on the network.
  • I know how to back up a file to a server.

MODULE II: Basic Applications: Word Processing | Internet Skills | E-Mail | Communications

Word Processing
  • I can open, edit , preview, save, and print a document.
  • I can create a basic document and apply text and style elements, such as changing fonts and applying bold, italic, or underline formatting.
  • I can apply document formatting, such as changing margins, setting tabs, and aligning text.
  • I can insert clipart, charts, WordArt, and images into a document.
  • I can design and create a document using columns and tables.
  • I can save word processing documents in other file formats (i.e., RTF, TXT, HTML, templates, stationery, etc.)
  • I can adjust text around an image using the wrap feature.
  • I can adjust text flow by inserting column or page breaks.
  • I can organize my document by creating page breaks, headers, footers, and a table of contents.

Internet Skills

  • I know how to access e-mail from work or home.
  • I can send, receive, and open e-mail attachments.
  • I know how to subscribe to and unsubscribe from a listserv/distribution list.
  • I know where to enter a website address in a web browser to access a specific site.
  • I know how to use search engines such as Yahoo, AltaVista, Google, and Northern Light.
  • I know how to save and edit bookmarks.
  • I can recognize propaganda, a hoax, or flawed logic from an Internet source.
  • I recognize and can take action in dealing with Internet risks, such as viruses.
  • I understand copyright laws and citation rules related to Internet resources.

E-mail

  • I know my e-mail address.
  • I know when I have e-mail.
  • I can search for other addresses.
  • I know how to send/receive e-mail messages.
  • I know how to address a new e-mail.
  • I know how to create new address books.
  • I can copy and paste other documents into an e-mail.
  • I can create a file system for storing e-mail communications.
  • I know how to create, send, and open an attachment.
  • I know if I am online or offline
  • I understand e-mail etiquette (i.e. lower case, forward, ccing, etc.).
  • I am familiar with the WSD K-20 Network Policy, procedures and responsibilities.
  • I know how to file, trash, and delete my e-mail messages.

Communication Skills (E-Mail Application)

  • I use e-mail to correspond with my colleagues.
  • I belong to and contribute to one or more education-related discussion groups or listservs.
  • I use listservs and distribution lists to share or request educational information.
  • I participate in online courses or scheduled online professional development experiences.
  • I participate in interactive videoconferencing with other teachers or for professional development.
  • I use technology, such as discussion boards and posting resources to web sites, to support professional collaboration.
  • I use technology to communicate with parents, professionals, and/or community members.
  • I use a filing system for storing e-mail communications.
  • I read educational technology journals both in print and electronic form.
  • I use e-mail to gather ideas for student projects, assessment tools, and lesson plans.
