Wenatchee School District Nurses

Good health enhances your student's ability to learn. School nursing has grown to meet student need, and involves much more than dispensing hugs and band-aids!  Nurses address issues that face our students and assist teachers to enable our students the best learning experience.

School nurses support good health and learning by performing a variety of duties including: direct student care; assessing student health needs; providing inservice training for staff and students; conducting mandatory health screenings; overseeing maintenance of student health and immunization records; administering medication; providing emergency first aid to students and staff; and working with the Department of Health in the control of communicable diseases.

School secretaries support each school and the school nurse by performing such tasks as dispensing medication to students, providing first aid to ill or injured students, and documenting health room activity.

Contact

You may contact nurses at school, or by contacting Pam Stubbe, secretary, at (509)-665-9134 or at stubbe.p@mail.wsd.wednet.edu.

Safety

Keep your student's HEALTH and EMERGENCY INFORMATION updated with current names and telephone numbers by contacting your school.

Student Health Information is updated yearly.  Please keep your school nurse updated on your child's health status, such as surgeries, medications, illnesses/diseases, new diagnoses, or other conditions that may affect your child's school performance.

Certain health conditions may require an Individual Health Plan (IHP) for the safety and well being of your child.  Please contact your school nurse if you believe your child may benefit from an Individual Health Plan.

Students with potentially life-threatening health conditions

Students with potentially life-threatening health conditions require an Emergency Medical Plan (EMP) to be in place before they may attend school.  Please contact your school nurse if you have questions.

Required student immunizations

Washington State requires certain immunizations before children may attend school.  Children may get their immunizations from their health care provider or at the Chelan-Douglas County Health Department.  Please click here for more information.

Medications

In order to dispense prescription medicine, the school district is required to have an authorization form completed by the prescribing physician and the parent/guardian.  Over-the-counter medication requires an authorization form signed by the physician and is for 15 days.  A longer authorization can be obtained.

Washington State law provides that students requiring rescue medications may carry and self-administer an inhaler, or Epi-pen, after certain paperwork and training have been accomplished.  If you would like more information about this, please contact your school nurse.

Vision, Hearing and Scoliosis Screening

  • Washington State law requires school districts to perform an annual health screening for vision, hearing and scoliosis.
  • Students may be referred to their school nurse for individual screening by a parent or teacher.

  • Vision and Hearing screening is offered to grades K, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 7.
  • Vision screening checks for distance vision problems.
  • Registered nurses re-screen of all students who do not pass the first screening.

  • Scoliosis screening is offered to grades 5, 7, 9.

  • These are screening services only and do not take the place of examinations performed by your eye specialist or family physician.

Home/hospital instruction

Home/hospital is a state-funded program that provides one-on-one tutoring for students too ill to attend school for a minimum of four weeks and a maximum of eighteen weeks per school year.  Information is available by contacting your school nurse or the secretary.

Sports

A completed School Athletics Physical form must be on file before students may participate in middle school or high school sports.  You may get forms at the school offices, or download a copy.
